Born in Manchester, England, Ashton emigrated to the United States as a member of the Manchester Social Community Company. After 1836 he was employed as a textile designer and began studying medicine in 1852 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was married to Sarah Heap, and practiced medicine in Cedar Grove, Franklin County, Ind.
